Fast stunt boat for thrill rides in UP
SAULT STE. MARIE, MI – A company that specializes in port tours on speedboats often used in action movie chases and stunts is about to test the waters of an Upper Peninsula tourist destination.
Thunder Bay, Canada-based Sail Superior Adventures is planning to bring its “Superior Rocket” boat to Sault Ste. Marie for thrill rides on the St. Mary’s River August 7-15, said Gregory Heroux of Sail Superior. The function test will help the business determine if it wants to grow in the community.
“Having a presence on both ends of (Lake Superior) is a good idea,” said Heroux. “This year it is especially good to bring the attraction to the petiole, because with the travel restriction not everyone can come to us. The Sault is magnificent, making it a second home would be ideal.
“Superior Rocket” is a 12 passenger rigid inflatable boat (RIB) capable of speeds of approximately 55 mph. It is built in aluminum and surrounded by a large inflatable tube. It is the type of boat used by action movie heroes like James Bond and Lara Croft, and by real-life heroes like coast guards, special forces, and search and rescue teams.

Tickets start at CAD $ 75 plus tax, or around US $ 60 based on today’s exchange rate. A five-hour private tour for up to 10 people costs C $ 1,475, or roughly $ 1,180 USD.
Sail Superior was approached by Tourism Sault Ste. Marie to bring her thrill rides to Michigan, and the travel agency agreed to underwrite the business, thereby minimizing the business risk. He is also protecting his own downside by setting a goal of selling 60% of tickets by June 15. If the goal is not reached, the tours may be canceled.
Ticket sales are expected to begin soon; check out the Sault Ste. Marie’s website for information.
