Fresno, Calif .– Gary Allen Smith
May 6, 1940 – August 16, 2021
Longtime Fresno resident Gary Allen Smith died Aug. 16 at Horizon Health and Subaigu Center. Both his parents, Hyman and Mollie Smith, died before their son. Gary’s father immigrated from Siberia in 1919 and successfully developed a first generation meat-packing company, Selma Dressed Beef, which is now known as Harris Ranch.
Gary was the first graduating class of Bullard High School. After graduating from Bullard in 1958, he went to Fresno State and focused on business. Gary was also a member of the Sigma Nu Brotherhood.
Gary will be remembered as an accomplished insurance professional in Fresno, always putting the best interests of his clients before his own. He started his career in San Francisco, but spent the rest of his professional career among his many friends and clients in his hometown. Prior to his retirement, Gary was recognized as California Insurance Agent of the Year.
“Gare”, as his many friends called him, was sociable in a nutshell. He amused his family, friends and clients with witty words and stories, often told after a round of golf on the 19th hole. Gary was proud to be a National Guard veteran, always dressed to perfection in his checkered sports coats, and used to line his shoes in his closet as neat as soldiers in training. Gary had a unique sarcastic wit about him that often made others laugh. Rightly, Gary liked to say, “Don’t worry about me, I’m fine.
Gary is survived by his brothers, Marvin Smith and Richard Smith.
He was delighted with his son, Gary H. Smith, his daughter Caroline Hernandez, her husband Esteban and his granddaughter, Ivey and Ivey’s grandmother, Katherine Mann Malcom.
Rabbi Rick Winer will officiate at Gary’s funeral service on Sunday August 29 at 11:30 am at the Chapel of Light, 1620 W. Belmont Ave.
Memorials can be made at: Central California Food Bank and Temple Beth Israel, Fresno.
