Thieves and vandals return to their bad manners and to a higher level than before the COVID-19 pandemic

LOS ANGELES, October 13, 2021 / PRNewswire / – Mercury Insurance Reports Dramatic Increase in Vandalism and Auto Theft in California with comprehensive auto insurance claims up 40% from pre-pandemic levels. While the increase in theft and vandalism began when the COVID-19 pandemic began, the theft of audio and other auto parts, including catalytic converters, continues to increase as pandemic restrictions are relaxed.

This year, Northern California reported nearly double the frequency of overall auto claims that Southern california, areas with lower population density reporting a higher rate of theft than areas with higher population. Top Five Vehicles for Global Mercury Claims in California are the :

“Thieves love the Toyota Prius,” said Petro. “The frequency of claims for this vehicle compared to the other vehicles on the list is almost double. If you own a Prius, be very careful where you park and what you keep there.”
According to the National Insurance Crime Bureau, California leads the nation in auto thefts. Motor vehicle theft reports have increased nearly 24% since 2019. The top five vehicles for Mercury’s total thefts in California are the :

- Honda accord
- Kia Optima
- Honda Civic
Car thieves can strike anywhere and anytime. According to Mercury claims data, nearly 22% of aggregate claims claims occur overnight. Mercury offers the following tips to help prevent homeowners from falling victim to a potential prowler:
- Never leave the keys in the ignition or the moving car unattended, not even when it is parked in front of your house or on your property.
- When possible, park in well-lit, high-traffic areas.
- Roll up all the windows, lock your vehicle and set your car’s alarm every time you park.
- Never leave handbags, wallets, cell phones, keys or parcels in plain view. Regardless of whether the windows are up and the alarm is activated, a crash and seizure can occur within seconds.
- Never leave personal identification, such as a driver’s license or vehicle title, in your car.
- Purchase comprehensive insurance coverage to protect your vehicle in the event that it is damaged due to anything other than a car collision, such as theft, vandalism, fire, and flooding.
Victims of auto theft or vandalism should immediately contact their local police department to file a report. Contact your insurance company and file a claim within 24 hours of vandalism or theft of your vehicle.
